Book review- To kill a mockingbird
A picture of Atticus getting ready to shoot the rabid dog, Tim Johnson.
In this novel, the problem in the county of, Alabama, was the racism and prejudice on the African Americans. An example of this can be the Tom Robinson case, where Atticus defends Tom Robinson(who is a black person) against a white man, Bob Ewell. And we must say, we couldn’t believe at how prejudice and racist the outcome was. Even after Tom Robinson was plead innocent, he was suddenly killed by trying to escape the guards and got shot 17 times. The thing we most enjoyed about the book was that the whole point wasn’t to just know how Jem broke his arm, it was to teach us the things that happened in the 1930s, and how it affected people. The fact that these events happened to Harper Lee, says that there’s a lot that occured to the African Americans. I must say, the racism back then seems almost a bit unreal, that these poor African Americans had to be treated like this. Just because people are a different color, doesn't mean they should be treated differently, they still have feelings and are still human, just like everyone else in this world.
The symbolism in the novel, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ has featured various types of symbols like the type of flower. The red geranium defined in the book mentioned in page 288 which people says it belongs Mayella’s flowers, It could mean a secret message that the red geranium is defined Expected Meeting, Friendship, and Ingenuity. Mayella was asking for assistance, Tom Robinson helped her and did not want her to pay a nickel. Until her father Bob Ewells forced her daughter to not ever ask a negro and beaten her up so Bob could get Tom in prison for false charge for raping. A mad dog represents a dog infected with rabies running wildly in the streets running to a direction to bite somebody else to infect which all houses would be closed shut because of illness outside which Atticus shot the dog, “Don’t you go near that dog, you understand? Don’t go near him, he’s just as dangerous dead as alive.” Which is it mentioned on page 124 through 128. Boo Radley is a person who saved Scout and Jem which he saved both of them from Bob Ewell, when Bob Ewell mentioned, “One down two to go.” page 323 end of chapter 25, which he’s means he could try taking down literally Atticus’s family members or Atticus which the importances for Ewell at the end is him trying to kidnap Jem and Scout which ends up Bob’s death with a knife.
The main characters in the book are Scout, Jem, Dill, and Atticus. The characters play a part in Scout's life and how she sees the world and Maycomb. The characters also impact the way the story in the novel goes. Scout is the one who narrates her experiences throughout the book and explains how her life was when she was a kid. Atticus was the parent of Jem and Scout, and worked as a lawyer. Jem is Scout's brother who she hangs out with a lot. Dill is Scout and Jem’s summer friend. Bob Ewell is a drunk man who also impacts the story. Mayella is Bob Ewell's daughter, and also impacts a character in the novel, Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a black man who was charged for raping Mayella. But then killed by the guards in prison camp for attempt escape.
The main plot in the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird” Scout Finch lives with her brother, Jem, and their widowed father, Atticus, in the sleepy Alabama town of Maycomb. Maycomb is suffering through the Great Depression, but Atticus is a prominent lawyer and the Finch family is reasonably well off in comparison to the rest of society. The beginning making you wonder why Jem broke his arm in the first place in which confuses you why explaining all of this throughout all the chapter instead of saying why Jem’s arm broke till it explained on the last chapter of the novel. But, if I had to be honest, the novel’s main points were the racism, prejudice, and the fact that African Americans got treated poorly for being a different color, rather than how Jem broke his arm.
After all the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird was a great book to read. We really enjoyed this book and would shown this to my friends just to share the experience with my friends. It would also be an amazing group read to be with friends. The book also had great plot such as the racism and prejudice that went on, and due to the fact the start of the book was to let the reader know that all the events leading to the end is how Jem broke his arm. We really enjoyed how it shows, kids at such young ages have such innocence. But, as they grow older, they slowly lose that innocence, and soon start realizing what the real world actually is. An example of that, is Scout in the novel, and that's because Scout was slowly starting to learn all the prejudice and racism that went on in Maycomb county, such as the Tom Robinson case. We also really enjoyed the symbolism in the novel, and how they were able to symbolize so many things, like the red geranium. If we all had to rate this novel from 1 to 10 knotholes, 1 being the worse, and 10 being the best, we'd rate this 9 knotholes out of 10. There was so much going on, like the prejudice, racism, symbolism, Scout's life, that it's almost like you can get off track easily, but overall, the novel was amazing to read.
